Well today I had unbelievable luck. Considering that my car began stuttering as I ran out of gas going up the hill on 101 over Sausalito at 6:30 this morning, I could have begun this blog much differently. But thanks to my fairy godmother or actually thanks to Tyrone, luck is what I had.
The gas gauge in my Mercedes does not work very well but I have been going over 300 miles on a tank of biodiesel. So at 270 miles I did not expect to run out. But the car began stuttering on my way to Ocean Beach (I have the day off - hooray). I pushed it up the hill and luckily made it, coasted through the rainbow tunnel and down the hill, pulling off just before the Golden Gate Bridge. I pulled over and turned my increasingly struggling car off. I was about to leave a note on my car that I ran out of gas in hopes of avoiding a ticket for parking in a no parking zone (my plan was to hike up to watch the sunrise and call someone to bring me gas). Before I even found a pen a truck pulled up behind me. It looked like a road side assistance vehicle so I hopped out and told him I ran out of gas. He looked at my bumper sticker and said
"You ran out of bio-diesel", I said "yeah but regular diesel will work" and he said "well I got some of that!". He poured a couple gallons of diesel in my tank and then gave me a survey to fill out asking me how the FREE service was!!! Our tax dollars at work! Thank God for socialism. Shoot, with fuel prices the way they are, I wonder how often I can hook up with this guy?
Tryone worked for the Freeway Service Patrol a joint effort of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the CHP, and Caltrans.
Tyrone was a super friendly guy and was in love with my car. He could not believe how nice a condition it is in and he was very curious about the bio-diesel. He says he is thinking of going diesel and making his own bio-diesel in his garage so he can say "fuck you" to the oil companies. Sounds like a good idea to me. I wish I had the ability to make my own fuel from garbage veggie oil, that is truly how bio-diesels really are a more environmentally friendly form of transport.
Anyway, just had to share my luck with you all, happy Monday.
